Duke University dissertation and thesis
Academic
Follows the LaTeX template the Duke University Graduate School publishes (the class dukedissertation2025 by Michael Gao, after earlier versions by Leon Riesebos, Michael Gratton and others, CC BY 4.0) and the Graduate School's Guide for Electronic Submission of Theses and Dissertations; where the two differ, the Guide is followed. A dissertation (Doctor of Philosophy) or a thesis (Master of Science, Master of Arts) in English, on US Letter paper with a 1.5 inch left margin, with the title page and the abstract title page with the defense date, the advisor and the committee members over signature lines, the copyright page, the abstract, an optional dedication, the table of contents, the lists of tables and figures, an optional list of abbreviations and acknowledgements, double spacing, the appendices before the bibliography, an optional biography at the end and author-year citations, without the University's shield. The changes to the original, listed in the template's header, concern how the details are entered, smaller spaces on the title pages for a long title or many committee members, the Master of Arts, paragraph headings on a line of their own, the bibliography in the document's citation style and landscape pages, which the template does not take over; after the Guide, the whole text is in one font, Palatino (the template's class sets most of it in Computer Modern), the contents are titled Table of Contents and the list of abbreviations List of Abbreviations, the lists of tables and figures appear only when the text has tables or figures, indented quotations are single-spaced, footnotes start from 1 in every chapter and the PDF has no bookmarks and, but for the citations, no links.
