One document instead of final_v3.docx

Word can do almost anything. TommDoc does one thing properly: a long document that keeps its format, citations and numbering, even when several people write it at once. See the same tasks in both tools.

Updated: October 2026. We stay fair where Word leads, too.

Same task, two tools

What it looks like in Word and in TommDoc

Four situations anyone who has written a thesis or company documentation with other people will know.

01

Feedback and versions

WordVersions travel by email

TommDocOne document for everyone

In TommDoc you write with others in one document in the browser and see their cursors right away. Your supervisor comments on the text they are reading, and older states are in the version history. To let them comment, invite them to the space as an Editor (a Reader cannot comment). To be fair: with Microsoft 365 and the file in OneDrive, Word can do simultaneous writing too.

02

Figure numbering and references to figures

WordYou refresh references by hand (F9)

TommDocNumbers update on their own

A caption gets its number on its own, and you insert a reference with #. When you move a figure or add a new one, the numbers and references update. Desktop Word can do captions and cross-references, but you refresh the references by hand (F9), and in Word for the web you cannot create captions.

03

Citations and a bibliography to ČSN ISO 690

WordGeneric styles, the Czech standard as an add-in

TommDocType @ and pick a source

Pick ČSN ISO 690, the Czech citation standard, in three variants, or APA, IEEE, Chicago or MLA from a list, and the bibliography builds itself. Sources come from Zotero, by DOI or ISBN, or from a BibTeX or RIS file. Word offers generic styles, and you add the current Czech standard with an add-in (Zotero on desktop only, Citace PRO). Word for the web cannot create citations.

04

The look of the whole document

WordYou police the format by hand

TommDocThe template sets the look

The template takes care of the page, margins, fonts, headings, numbering and title page. It is only a starting point: you edit it in a form or directly in code and see the changes in the PDF preview right away. Word has styles and templates too, but keeping a consistent look in them is up to you, especially when several people put the text together.

Bring one chapter over from Word and compare for yourself

Copy and paste the text, the template takes care of the look. Write it in your school’s or company’s template and look at the PDF.

Decide

When to choose TommDoc and when to stay with Word

TommDoc pays off when

  • You are writing a thesis or a technical report, and citations to ČSN ISO 690 and figure numbering have to be right.
  • You want a PDF that looks exactly as the guidelines say. You edit the template in a form or in code and see the changes in the preview right away.
  • Company proposals and reports should look the same whoever on the team writes them.
  • You write with other people at the same time and do not want to email files around.

Stay with Word when

  • You often work without an internet connection.
  • You are making a poster or flyer with freely placed elements.

Both handle comments, equations, charts and version history.

Moving from Word

Three steps to your first PDF

  1. 1

    Pick a template

The template is only a starting point. You edit the look of the export in a form or directly in the template’s code and see the changes in the preview right away. The gallery has thesis templates (UHK) and a seminar paper, and a simple base for companies to adapt. Template gallery

  2. 2

    Bring the text over

Copy the text from Word and paste it into the editor. We cannot open .docx files directly yet, Markdown and ZIP we can.

  3. 3

    Add your sources

Connect Zotero, look a source up by DOI or ISBN, or upload a BibTeX or RIS file. Then insert citations in the text with @.

FAQ

Common questions about moving from Word

Can I hand in a PDF from TommDoc instead of a Word file?
If your school or client accepts PDF, yes. The template takes care of margins, fonts, numbering and citations, and you adjust it to the guidelines in a form or directly in code, with a preview. You can also publish the document to a client or colleague by link, or invite them to the space as an editor. TommDoc cannot create a .docx file yet.
Can TommDoc open a .docx file?
Not yet. You can import Markdown, or a ZIP with several files. You can copy the text from Word and paste it into the editor.
Does TommDoc do footnotes?
Pick a note citation style (Chicago or ČSN ISO 690) and the citations become footnotes in the PDF.
Does TommDoc work offline?
No. TommDoc runs in the browser and saves as you go. If you often work without a connection, Word is the better choice.
Do I need Zotero for citations?
No. You can add sources by hand, by DOI or ISBN, or from a BibTeX or RIS file. Zotero helps if you already use it.
